Interview with Chief Janette Peterson

Author: 2011/12/15

Annapolis Valley First Nation's Chief Janette Peterson discusses political salaries on native bands and calls for more transparency on spending. She credits the Canadian Taxpayers Federation for exposing excessive salaries on her band, which led to her running for chief. Now elected, Peterson says she plans on reducing the Chief's salary which currently sits at $160,000. When pressed on what she should be making, Peterson said based on the size of her band, which sits at 300 people, she felt a salary of around $45,000 per year would be fair. She added that Chiefs and councillor across Canada are generally overpaid.
